• Grand Duchess Alexandra Pavlovna of Russia



Daugther of Tsar Paul I and Tsarina Maria Feodorovna she was born on 9 August 1783. She was the favourite daughter of her father and was very talented Catherine II her grandmother wrote to Baron Grimm: "She speaks four languages, writes well, draws, plays the harpsichord, sings, dances, learns easily and reveals a nature of extraordinary gentleness."
She married Archduke Joseph of Austria Palatine of Hungary on 30 october 1799 at Saint Petersburg although they loved each other she was miserably unhappy at the Austrian court. After a a difficult pregnancy she finally gave birth to a daughter, who was named Alexandrine but the baby died several hours later. Alexandra contracted puerperal fever, and died on 16 March 1801 aged to 17.
On March 16, 1801, Joseph mournfully wrote to Paul I of Russia, "I had an irreparable misfortune on losing my wife. She is no more, and my happiness all vanished." Paul I who could never read this letter is murdered the same week.
